As we prepare for a newly appointed Alameda County District Attorney, we invite guest speakers Norma Orozco (Ella Baker Center), Alyssa Victory (ACLU) and Jess Inson (Oakland Rising) for a discussion on the role of the District Attorney, the work of the DA Accountability Table, and the action steps we can take to protect progressive policies in Alameda County.

“We want to see someone who will commit to protecting our immigrant communities. The DA has the power in terms of their charging decisions – to make sure they do not unnecessarily create immigration consequences, they have power to remove or void old convictions for people who may put them at risk of immigration now. We’re seeing that the Trump administration is moving very quickly to strip people of their rights, to remove people, even citizens are being terrorized – everybody has a stake in this issue. Alameda County is a sanctuary county. All cities in our counties are sanctuary cities.

We need a DA who will have policies in their office and prosecute in a way that is aligned already with what our county has said and what people are saying in the streets right now.

We would like to see our youth not charged as adults. We would like to see access to rehabilitation. A second chance at a first class life as our former DA would say.” -Alyssa Victory, ACLU
