BlackPAC: Building Black Political Power in Our Communities
On August 9, 2016 I had the opportunity to attend the BlackPAC training in New Orleans with two Oakland Rising Daily Team members: Ariel Kelly and Tim Deweaver. BlackPAC is an independent 527 working to harness the political power of Black voters, which will be ever more important given the political climate of this upcoming election cycle.
Celebrating Farm Workers This Labor Day
This Monday we honor American workers by celebrating Labor Day. We at Oakland Rising have beenwatching with anticipation the outcome of Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez’ bill to expand overtime protections to California farmworkers. The bill passed yesterday and is now awaiting Governor Brown’s signature.
Progress on Advancing Racial Equity in Oakland
In mid-August Race Forward convened racial justice leaders from across Oakland for an event called Advancing Racial Equity in Oakland.
REGISTER TO VOTE: Protect Oakland Renters, Reform Juvenile Justice, and Tax The Rich
With 77 days until the election is over, Oakland voters have a lot to be excited about on the ballot. Locally, the Town will be looking at strengthening protections for renters to combat the tidal wave of displacement sweeping through our communities.
Mobilizing the Progressive Vote for June 7
May 14th marks the first day of campaign season at Oakland Rising. Our focus this primary season will be mobilizing our base to turnout the vote on June 7th and become part of the Million Voters Project to engage and turnout 1 million voters in 2016 and beyond.

Announcing Oakland Rising’s New Executive Director
Oakland Rising’s Advisory Board is excited to announce that we have appointed Jessamyn Sabbag as Executive Director.
2015 Values Based Leadership Program
The Values Based Leadership Program is a collaborative project between Oakland Rising, the Alameda County Labor Council, and Working Partnerships USA. It seeks to develop the capacity of grassroots leaders in Oakland and Alameda County to engage in collective, accountable and deeply rooted leadership, to drive values-based change towards greater racial and economic justice. We concluded our second program in October 2015, graduating a cohort of 26 leaders over the last two years.
And the winner is….
Every year members of the Oakland Progressives Party Co-Host Committee are charged with nominating and voting for Oakland’s most progressive organizations, activists and elected officials. This year, our Co-Hosts’ nominations and votes say one thing about this moment in Oakland’s progressive movement: Direct Action is Progress in Action.
Community Tickets Available
Next Thursday, Oakland Rising will host the annual Oakland Progressive Party and Townie Awards. Despite our audacious fundraising goal of $25,000, the most important thing is that everyday Oaklanders are in the house to celebrate, network, and build community.
