With sky-high housing costs and the rapid displacement of many of our long-time Oakland families, government services like childcare stipends are the lifeline for many as they work to provide for their families. This June, we have the chance to pass Measure A – Alameda County’s Initiative for Child Care and Early Education – which would bring access to affordable childcare to more families and stabilization to early educators by increasing their pay to $15/hour.

We need your help to spread the word about Measure A. Can you join us this Saturday for the campaign kickoff?

Measure A will address our child care crisis by:

  • expanding access to child care and preschool to 1,000s of low- and middle-income children, including services for homeless children,
  • raising child care worker salaries to $15 per hour, and
  • enhancing program quality.

Through a half-percent sales tax, we will generate an estimated $140 million annually which will be subject to citizens’ oversight, public disclosure of spending, and mandatory annual audits so that we know with confidence that it all goes to funding child care and early education.

We need volunteers to come to the Measure A Campaign Kickoff on Saturday!

When: Saturday, March 24 from 10am – noon
Where: San Leandro Boys and Girls Club (401 Marina Blvd. at San Leandro Blvd)
What: After a short program, Oakland Rising volunteers will canvass with Parent Voices Oakland volunteers to promote Measure A.
Note: Coffee and breakfast will be provided. Children are welcome to attend the Children’s Corner (with games, activities, and learning activities!) and walk with you during the canvass.
Transit/Parking: San Leandro BART is 6 blocks from the Boys and Girls Club / 1 Bus stops near San Leandro BART / Free parking lot

We are proud to work with our collaborative partner, Parent Voices Oakland (PVO), to pass this measure that will promote equity, prevent children from falling into the opportunity gap, and do right by our childcare workers. “It [child care] is a critical work support for families, a service that caregivers are paid far too little to provide in our communities, and the foundation on which many educational and developmental experiences can be built for children,” says Clarissa Doutherd of PVO.

Oakland Rising and our collaborative partners are united in our vision for a city that embodies health, happiness, safety, and equal opportunities for all. Our goal is to create a model of progress and sustainability that showcases the possibilities for American cities in the 21st century. We are committed to dismantling the barriers of racial, economic, political, environmental, and educational inequities that have divided us, and instead, embracing the collective strength found in our city’s diversity. We firmly believe that Oakland can achieve its full potential when every resident, student, and bus rider has the ability to shape our city’s future. This vision is attainable and we are determined to realize it through our collective actions, whether it’s through voting, meetings, or call to actions.

Every year, we release a Vision, Issues, and Policy Platform (VIPP) which outlines the annual policies that we and our eight partner organizations prioritize in order to advance racial, economic, and environmental justice in the Town. Our collaborative’s agenda encompasses a range of critical initiatives, from expanding affordable housing to creating a more equitable democracy through campaign finance reforms. These priorities are designed to provide vital protections and innovative solutions for the most vulnerable members of our community. As we continue our efforts to promote these policies, we hold conversations with thousands of voters, lead and co-host impactful town hall meetings, educate and mobilize residents and voters, and undertake various other initiatives.

To gain a deeper understanding of our commitment to resist, protect, and advance in this political moment, we invite you to explore our 2023 Vision, Issues, and Policy Platform. Together, we are making strides towards a more equitable and just Oakland, and we remain steadfast in our pursuit of change, one vote, one meeting, one march at a time.
