On To The Next One… June 2011 Special Election
It wouldn’t be California if we didn’t have at least one Special Election each year, right? Although the final date and ballot items are still being decided, we can count on having a Statewide Special Election this June.
Putting Oakland To Work
“I’m ready to work, when is the next campaign?” The voice coming through the phone is tinged with urgency, excitement and a glimmer of hope.
Field Team Leader Dayna Williams has received one of these phone calls at least two to three times a day, everyday since the close of Oakland Rising’s 2010 campaign cycle. On the other side of the call is likely one of the 111 people hired from Oakland Rising’s target neighborhoods and communities, who spent six days a week for five and a half weeks, as a paid member of Oakland Rising’s field team.
Oakland Welcomes Mayor Jean Quan!
On Monday January 3, 2010, Oakland welcomed it’s new Mayor- Jean Quan! The election of the 1st Asian-American and woman Mayor of a major US city has made national headlines and marks an unforgettable moment in Oakland’s history. The Oakland Rising team joined in the celebration and attended the inaugural ceremony at the Fox Theatre in Uptown Oakland.
Happy New Year!
Thank you to our donors, volunteers, friends, families and neighbors for being a part of proving that everyday residents working together have the power to change the way our city is run.
Oakland Rising Wins Prop 23 (No) and Prop 25 (Yes)
Three weeks ago we completed our 4th campaign of the year with big wins on Prop 23 (No) and Prop 25 (Yes), our biggest and best to date! Our team of 20 paid canvassers and 265 incredible volunteers talked to 13,585 voters over the course of 4 weeks, and 89% of them (12,057) supported our positions. This campaign was part of a larger statewide effort with the California Alliance to impact 12 regions of California to vote No on Prop 23, the Dirty Energy Initiative and Yes on Prop 25 to end budget gridlock. Together with our partners around the state, we talked to 174,084 “unlikely and occasional” voters mostly in low-income communities of color.
Meet an Oakland Rising Star
I remember the first time I saw Dayna Williams – wearing a business suit, portfolio in hand, sitting front and center at a group interview for Oakland Rising’s Census campaign. After a great interview, the East Oakland native and formerly incarcerated single mom of two brilliant teenagers, was hired on to our field team.
At the end of the Census campaign, I immediately asked Dayna if she would consider being Team Leader for our next campaign.

Redford Center selects Esperanza Tervalon-Daumont as 2010 Art of Activism Award Recipient
Dear Friends~
Like you, I have committed my career to fighting for justice, equity and democracy for workers, low-income people, communities of color and the broader electorate. We don’t do this work for acclaim or fame, but out of a deep sense of duty and responsibility to the communities we come from and serve. As I enter the second month of my second year at Oakland Rising, I am honored to share some humbling news that we hope will bring greater awareness and attention to the amazing work and accomplishments of Oakland Rising.
I have the honor of being the (Robert) Redford Center 2010 Art of Activism Award Recipient. On November 11th, the Redford Center will host a special award ceremony with Newark Mayor, Corey Booker at the Sundance Kabuki Cinema in San Francisco.
